Google map for Hegartys and Murphys in Cambridge

Relatives still living and/or working in Cambridge expressed curiosity about exactly where our ancestors lived in the early 20th century, so I made a Google map. These home addresses were taken from censuses, birth records, draft registrations, news articles, etc. Both the Hegartys and Murphys immigrated from Ireland to Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Murphys moved over to Somerville and, in their later years, the Hegartys moved to Brighton. Click through and be ready to zoom in or out as necessary.

I love how families lived so close to each other back then. Our Hegartys and Finnigans all lived in Somerville. Some still do. All the neices and nephews and sons and daughters are moving to other destinations. Ah, the old days!

My father loved to tell and retell the stories of his childhood adventures in Somerville, which sounded practically like farmland back in the 1930s. It was all these happy stories of stealing fruit from the neighbors and roaming into the wilderness and running miles from vicious dogs and going enormous lengths to see relatives. One day when I was visiting I asked him to drive to his childhood home and show me. He was thrilled, and we did, but I was shocked that all of these epic adventures had happened in the space of about one city block. That whole trek to the aunt’s house was about two houses away.
